I don't see any rules in the info about posting sales, but I could just be blind as fuck. ;) Having a sale in my journal: MAC Pigments, eyeliners, mascara and more. Plus clothes by Lip Service, Tripp, etc.

If this isn't allowed, I'll delete it ASAP. Just let me know. ;)

City Backpack [11 Nov 2009|09:09am]

HI all!
This is my FIRST time posting here,
& i'm glad to share with you this backpack i made a while back :D
This is something I made in about May 2009, after my Mid-year Examinations. It's basically a small bag which can be carried around. I got the tutorial off HeartOfMary's blog. The tutorial was good, but the straps, I feel, should not be sewn from the bottom, but rather from the sides. Also, the next time i attempt this bag, I plan to make it bigger, so that it can fit A4 and so that I can bring it to school. A picture paints a thousand words, So here are the pics for you to see! You be the judge (:

Thissss is my new doll pattern. It needs some tweaking, still, though. The pattern is quite a bit more painstaking than the simpler one, but I love the results. I'm not at ALL happy with how her mouth turned out (not the best at embroidery, yet, but I'm workin' on it), BUT I love her hair, I love the new pattern, and I'm really proud of her dress and... shoe... I have to make her a second one. xD

Speaking of doll dresses... anyone know how to keep the seams from being all crazy chunky? =/ I usually knit their dresses, so sewing them is a little new to me.

What a night. My poor girlfriends had to see me at my worst. Timothy too. Not that he hasn't before, but whatever. Such a good birthday. Soooo good. Puked in the sink when I got home. Feeling half way decent this morning.

Good 21'st. Everyone that I wanted to be there - was.

High-waisted wiggle skirt I made for myself. It's thick jersey and quite simple, two darts in the front, 4 in the back.

Do you lovely folks have any tips on picking fabric that you're sure will have minimal bobbling? I particularly have this problem with jerseys which sometimes bobble just from light handling, even before the first wash! I don't know much about fabric properties so what should I look out for?

Burda mens sizing question and a chair refashion (possibly tutorial?) [09 Nov 2009|09:52pm]

sew_hip

[tcarole]
Started out to make this for my husband (BWOF 08/09 133):

Got frustrated when the muslin was ridiculously huge even though I used the corresponding chest size in the chart. I had some busy sewing energy so I recovered my husband's home office chair from a thrifted curtain instead. I used a zipper down the back to get a tight fit for a clean, upholstered look. I was really pleased with the result.

More pics on my livejournal including chair before and after. I'm thinking of doing a tutorial since I have one more chair to make a pattern for (my chair). Anyone interested? I will take pictures and try to document how I do it.

Also...

Has anyone made that Burda men's jacket? The sizing for men in their magazine seems totally whack. I'm wondering if I have a typo or something, it's that bad. Would love to hear any feedback on Burda sizing for men.

Long time lurker, first time poster... [10 Nov 2009|12:04am]

Hi there!

So, I was sewing a set of tab-top curtains this weekend for my bedroom. I've lined the curtains with a fleece-let fabric (It's an energy conservation thing. I hope.), which is making the whole structure pretty... thick. According to the very basic pattern I'm following, my next (and final) step is to attach the tab tops to the curtain by sandwiching the top of the curtain and top stitching each tab into place.

Now, my dilemma.

When I went to sew the first tab on things were fine. Then, suddenly, during the second tab, my machine gave a loud "bang!" and the needle snapped in two. I removed the curtain, replaced the needle and checked to see if my machine would sew okay.

It won't. Unfortunately, this is my first machine and I'm very much a beginner seamstress. I don't know what is wrong, exactly. When I sew a straight line everything works just fine. The reverse stitch is where I seem to have an issue: the fabric bunches instead of being pulled back, so the stitching goes to one side. The piece that my bobbin sits in appears to be loose, I can hear it clattering around and it's easy to move. Does that mean something I can't see is broken, maybe something that holds the bobbin part in place? Anyone know of a way I can fix this all by my lonesome? Or should I just schedule an appointment with a trained professional now?

Widening a neckline [09 Nov 2009|12:57am]

sew_hip

[deadsilent]
I have a sheer knit top with a scoop neckline that I'd like to turn into an off the shoulder top. It has a skinny rib neckband like a regular tshirt, which already stretches to fit around my shoulders, but fits tight and does not stretch anymore.

Normally, I would just cut off the neckband and leave it raw, but it's a semi-nice top and I don't want it to roll. I'm thinking that my only fix is to cut off the neckband and finish it with foldover elastic.

Any other ideas? The quicker and easier, the better, as I'll be handsewing everything and I want to wear the top in a few days!

Because I like to stock up... [08 Nov 2009|02:42pm]

sew_hip

[xwhiterabbitx]
...and I'm sure other people do, too, JoAnn's is having a ..... sale (what holiday are we on, now? veteran's day, maybe?) and all Simplicity patterns are $1 for this week only. I got 9 patterns for $9 [plus tax, duh] and so I stocked up on several patterns that I wanted for myself for a while, as well as one for a friend's costume I'm working on and my best friend who does belly dancing (the belly dancing costumes aren't amazing, but it's a good jumping off point).
I'm thinking about going back and grabbing non-costume patterns for myself for the imaginary projects I'll never get to, but I like having the patterns in my supply that is completely disorganized and probably has several duplicates of the same thing...
anyways, go there! get cheap patterns! :D

overedge vs. overlock help please? [08 Nov 2009|09:06am]

sew_hip

[auryndancer]
[ mood | confused ]

 Hi all:

So I haven't seriously picked up sewing in years, but now is the time, I say! I have a pattern I want to work on, but the first step is stumping me (I know... not a good sign, right?) But I won't let it deter me: I know you guys can help me through!

The pattern tells me to: "Overlock all edges. Do not trim off any of the straight edges. On the handles' curved edges, trim off the 5/8" seam allowance"

First of all, I don't have a serger/overlock machine. My machine does have an "overedge" stitch, however. My research on the internet tells me that I can use this, I think...

So for my purposes, it seems that overlocking here just keeps the edges from fraying up... so it seems that you would do the stitch over the edge of the fabric- like... so the needle actually comes down OFF of the fabric on one edge of the stitch, right? If so, then how would I trimming the edges off of it? Should I actually be doing the stitch 5/8 of an inch IN from the edge? If so, then should the 5/8" line be at the inside of the stitch or outside? The photo that goes with the directions LOOKS like it shows stitching to the edge of the fabric, but it's hard to tell...

If it helps, the directions to the item that I am making are here: http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns/charlie-reusable-grocery-bag

Sorry if this sounds confusing or elementary. Any help with deciphering this would be grand. I've done machine sewing before, but never really used any stitch other then the straight running stitch. This is a whole new world to me. :-)

Thanks so very much in advance!!
